Bastian Thiery (b. 1990) is a photographer and director based in Berlin. For him photography and filmmaking are first of all a means to connect. He works from a documentary position, but pushes it further, towards constructing rather than recording.
Bastian came to photography through a move to New York, where he was working as a fashion model. An early interest in street and documentary photography met the city, and the camera gave him a way to reach it and the people in it. He studied documentary photography at ICP New York in 2014 and later graduated from the Ostkreuzschule für Fotografie in Berlin in 2018 with the book Humpelfuchs, a nocturnal search for a limping fox in Neukölln, a fable-like journey through a strange world.
His decade in front of the camera stays with him in the way he works with his subjects. An interest in individual expression, a sensibility for representation but also for humour and fashion run through his work. He directs and shoots brand and personal films as well as campaigns, editorial stories and corporate media, and is a regular contributor to ZEIT Magazin. Photography and film are always collaborative for him, with a particular beauty in arriving at something unforeseen together.
Bastian publishes a newsletter, Visions Repetitions, on Substack, alongside personal projects that examine the boundaries of publishing in a shifting media landscape.
